What the Mutant Gene is
Stan Lee and Jack Kirby introduced the mutant-as-genetic-category framework in The X-Men #1 (September 1963). Charles Xavier’s framing positions mutants as ‘homo superior,’ a genetic offshoot of humanity expressing a wide range of latent powers. The ‘X-Gene’ specific terminology emerged across the 1980s and 1990s as the X-Men franchise’s biology became more explicitly developed.
Collector context
X-Men #1 is the canonical first-appearance key. CGC 9.0 and above is in the mid five to low six figures. The Mutant Gene’s first-appearance value is folded into the broader X-Men team-debut value.
