Creation Story

The Shredder is Oroku Saki, leader of the Foot Clan and the enemy at the center of the Turtles’ origin. Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird built him as the dark mirror of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles themselves: where Splinter trained four students in honor, Saki commands an army of ninja for revenge.

His Mirage origin runs through Splinter’s. Saki had an older brother, Oroku Nagi, who was killed by the ninja master Hamato Yoshi in a feud over a woman named Tang Shen. Yoshi fled to New York with Shen, and years later Saki, by then the Shredder, followed and killed Yoshi to settle the score. Yoshi’s pet rat survived that night and became Splinter, which is why the Turtles’ sensei carries a grudge against the Shredder that his students end up paying out.

First Appearance and First Cover: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1

The Shredder first appears in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1 (May 1984), and he does not last the issue. He leads the Foot Clan against the four Turtles, who have come to avenge the master their own sensei lost, and at the end of the fight they kill him. It is an unusually final debut for a character who would become the franchise’s defining villain. Later stories brought the Shredder back in various forms, but the original meets his end in the same comic that introduces him.

That comic is one of the most valuable books in independent comics, and the Shredder shares its debut with the entire cast. The full collector and franchise story is on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles team page.
