Who are the Annihilators
The Annihilators are the galaxy’s heaviest hitters on a single roster. Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning assembled them in Annihilators #1, cover-dated March 2011, near the end of the cosmic Marvel run that began with the Annihilation event and rebuilt the Guardians of the Galaxy.
The premise is deterrence. Each member is powerful enough to end most conflicts alone, so putting the Silver Surfer, Gladiator, Beta Ray Bill, Ronan the Accuser, and Quasar on the same team creates a force most threats would not test. The idea was less a fighting unit than a standing answer to the question of who keeps the universe stable when the Guardians are not enough.
The Annihilators ran across two 2011 miniseries, the second subtitled Earthfall, sharing their books with a Rocket Raccoon and Groot back-up feature. They are a short-lived but high-powered footnote to Abnett and Lanning’s cosmic line rather than a long-running team.
Notable issues
- Annihilators #1 (2011): first appearance of the Annihilators.
For collectors
The key is Annihilators #1 (2011), the first appearance. It is a recent book, so collector interest rides on the members’ individual popularity (especially the Silver Surfer and Beta Ray Bill) and the cult following of the Abnett and Lanning cosmic run rather than scarcity.
